How To Get Rid Of Acidity?
Acidity Reasons And Solutions: Enjoying a heavy meal with some extra spicy food and later we feel a burning sensation in our chest, then this burning sensation is known as acidity. This is a very common problem. The gastric glands of our stomach secrete acid to digest food. However, when these gastric glands secrete excess acid, we experience acidity. It is also known as acid reflux. Acidity can be caused due to many factors like irregular eating habits, excessive consumption of spicy food, regular smoking, or consumption of alcohol. Burning, pain in the chest or throat is the most common symptom of acidity.
Apart from this, difficulty in swallowing, frequent burping, hiccups, or dyspepsia are other symptoms of acidity. Here are some of the most common causes of acidity and some easy ways to get rid of it.
Acidity Causes And Prevention Methods
When you eat a large amount of food in one meal, your stomach becomes more full. This can lead to reflux of acid into the food pipe, which can cause burning and pain in the stomach.
How to deal with it: To deal with this problem, all you have to do is divide your 3 big meals into five small meals at small intervals. By doing this your stomach will not be full. Also, don’t eat your food too quickly, chew it properly before swallowing.
There are small door-like structures at the junction of our body where the food pipe ends and the stomach begins. These doors are called sphincters and they are unidirectional, meaning they allow food to pass through the food pipe to the stomach but do not allow stomach acid to reach the food pipe. When there is excessive body fat, the load increases on the muscular structure which supports the sphincter of the food pipe. This can open up the sphincter, allowing the contents of the stomach to travel up the food pipe and cause acid reflux and acidity.
How to deal with it: You may need to consult a doctor before planning your weight loss regimen, as obesity can also be caused by some underlying condition like hypothyroidism. You can maintain your weight by eating a balanced diet, exercising regularly, and staying away from fried foods and carbonated drinks.
Smoking is not only harmful to your lungs but can also increase acid reflux in your body. Nicotine present in tobacco has the ability to relax the sphincter present in the lower food pipe. This allows the acid from the stomach to flow back into the food pipe, causing heartburn.
How to deal with it: The only thing you can do in this case is to quit smoking.
Certain Foods and Drinks
Food is considered the most common culprit of acidity. Fatty foods, spicy foods, foods like tomatoes, onions, garlic, mint, and chocolate, and drinks like coffee, tea, alcohol, and carbonated drinks are known to cause acidity.
How to deal with it: Instead of drinking carbonated drinks, you can consume coconut water, watermelon juice, and buttermilk which are known to calm your stomach and combat acidity. You can also drink a glass of fresh lime juice an hour before your meal to reduce the discomfort caused by acidity.
Side Effects of Certain Medicines
There are some medicines such as medicines for asthma, calcium-channel blockers, anti-allergies, antidepressants, and some pain relievers which can also cause acid reflux.
How to deal with it: If possible you can ask your doctor to change these medicines or ask him if you can take antacids along with these medicines.
